INTRODUCTION TO THE PROGRAMM "TEACHING HUMAN RIGHTS THROUGH TEACHING ABOUT THE HOLOCAUST"
We had to find a way to approach the contemporary relevance of the Holocaust without distorting the historical significance and specificity of the past and we have considered the balance between teaching about the past and making the Holocaust seem relevant for the greek students today.
The main topics in our project are:
-
To what extent is it important that Holocaust education is concerned with the lessons that can be learned from the past for today?
-
How have we integrated contemporary relevance into our own educational contexts?
-
To what issues do the students need to be sensitive in order to avoid over-simplified comparisons between the past and present?
Our goal is to connect a historical subject like the Holocaust to human rights education, local history (Heraklion in Attica is a multicultural and multi-religious suburb of Athens) and contemporary instances of injustice based on race, religion and ethnicity.
